Polygonatum sibiricum root grown in the mountainous east of Liaoning Province and processed by the nine-steam-nine-dry method — repeated cycles of steaming and sun-drying that darken the root and convert its starches. The full nine cycles take roughly three weeks and cannot be shortened without changing the finished material.
The root is harvested in autumn, sorted by size, then processed in small batches. Each batch is traceable to the plot it came from.
Note for EU buyers: Polygonatum species do not have a documented history of consumption in Europe before 1997 and may be treated as a novel food in the EU. Regulatory status is under review — see the product documentation.
